Prominent oil investor, financier Matthew Simmons, who caused a stir with his 2005 book "Twilight in the Desert: The Coming Saudi Oil Shock and the World Economy," has died. He was 67.
The famed energy banker was a prominent proponent of peak oil theory, and most recently got attention for his dire calls about the fate of the Gulf of Mexico. His legacy will no doubt be his work on peak oil and resources scarcity. Matt was a man not afraid to speak his own mind, even when it did not with the view of many of his traditional clients.
Simmons, an investment banker specializing in the energy industry, theorized that Saudi Arabia's oil reserves were overestimated, oil production had peaked and we were in for a rude shock when the pumps started going dry. His book Twilight in the Desert detailed his research into the planet's actual remaining oil reserves concluding that we are soon to reach the peak of oil production. He encouraged policy makers to move away from oil dependence.
